June Business of the Month - Big Brothers Bigs Sisters of the Laurel Region
Congratulations Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region for being selected as the GRC June Business of the Month.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the world. Trained professionals recruit, screen, match, and support Bigs and Littles through a network of 400 agencies throughout the county, and these one-to-one mentoring relationships have documented positive outcomes for children. Bigs and Littles, and their families, are from all walks of life and are as diverse as all of America. What our Littles have in common is a desire to have a Big, an extra caring adult in their life. What Bigs have in common is a willingness to share some fun with a young person.
In 1975, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Westmoreland County was formed to provide services to children through mentoring relationships. In 2001, services were expanded into Fayette County in an attempt to change the lives of additional children. The agency’s name was then changed to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region (BBBSLR), and over 600 children per year now receive valuable, one-to-one mentoring services.
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region (BBBSLR) is attained through unique programming options that are individualized for each child and volunteer. The agency provides the supportive services necessary for youth to gain a valuable education and improve self-confidence while offering them tools to become successful in life, all through community participation in children’s learning and personal growth.
BBBSLR staff take great care in matching together a child and volunteer with similar interests and hobbies. Thus, volunteers are encouraged to try to engage in meaningful conversations with the child and incorporate the child into their daily routine through free and low-cost activities they would normally do. The most important thing for a volunteer to remember is that you are a friend that child can count on, someone to share the little moments that can create big magic!
There are two main program options that fit most volunteers’ schedules:
Community-Based Mentoring Program:
In Community-Based Mentoring, Big Brother and Big Sister volunteers provide children and youth – our “Littles” - individualized time and attention on a regular basis, typically 2 – 4 times a month, for two to three hours. During unstructured weekly or bi-weekly outings, filled with conversations and shared activities, they develop a relationship that helps youth manage the every day challenges that are part of “growing up.” During the time with their Big, children gain new skills, explore new interests and test behaviors that expand their experience base beyond their family or neighborhood. Over the course of time, children gain confidence in themselves, acquire new skills and competencies, and develop an enhanced capacity to care for others – all tasks that are a part of developing healthy maturity. Volunteers experience a sense of discovery and enjoyment as they see the world of possibility open up through the child’s eyes.
School-Based Mentoring Programs:
Through School-Based Mentoring Programs, Big Brother and Big sister volunteers offer children and youth individualized time and attention on a consistent basis, with the venue being the child’s school rather than the community. School personnel help identify those children who can most benefit from an extra caring adult in their lives. Volunteers and children meet regularly during the school year – typically each week, utilizing the resources available within the school: computer labs, the library, the gym, a classroom, or the schoolyard. During the summer, they may exchange letters, email messages or phone calls, or attend an agency-sponsored event. Some matches move to become Community-Based Matches so they can meet more regularly.
Whether they just talk, play board games, or read the newspaper together, their relationship promotes a positive school experience for the child: good attendance, positive peer and adult relationships, a positive attitude, and academic enrichment. As their friendship evolves over time, volunteers and children discover ways to make school and learning fun. When matches continue from one school year to the next, volunteers experience the satisfaction of watching their Littles achieve success in school.
Volunteers in School-Based Mentoring include: high school students, college students, and adult community members, often volunteers from corporations and businesses.
BBBSLR operates three School-Based Mentoring Program options to allow for greater flexibility in meeting volunteers’ needs:
Breakfast Buddies: This program achieves success by matching community
volunteers with at-risk elementary students and providing a weekly breakfast-time mentoring session. The goal of the program is to allow for the elementary students to experience a positive mentoring session and ultimately improve grades and reduce their tardiness and absenteeism rates.
Lunch Buddies: This program achieves success by matching local college
students and community volunteers with at-risk elementary students and providing a weekly lunch-time mentoring session. The goal of the program is to allow for the elementary students to experience a positive mentoring session and ultimately improve grades and reduce their tardiness and absenteeism rates.
After-School Tutoring: This program achieves success by matching high school
students, college students, and community volunteers with at-risk elementary students and providing weekly after-school tutoring sessions. The goal of the program is to improve the grades of the elementary school students and reduce their tardiness and absenteeism rates.

2012 GRC Recognition Dinner
The Greater Rostraver Chamber of Commerce celebrated the 37th year of recognizing an outstanding individual and/or business in the community. The special event was held at the Willow Room in Rostraver Twp. on April 26, 2012. With over 100 guests in attendance, GRC President Keith Peer served as the Master of Ceremonies. The recognition stepped into a new direction this year and expanded their recognition by honoring 3 different categories. The honorees were Martin’s Flowers & Shrubs as Business of the Year, Robert Mesher for the Community Service Award and Tanya Chaney as The Young Professional of the Year.
The selection of the Business of the year uses the criteria of outstanding community support, involvement and leadership. A business that represents the Martin family for 45 years, Martin’s Flowers & Shrubs is very well known in the Tri State area and is operated by a second generation. Current owners are Mark, Adam and Brad Martin. Accepting the honor as founder of the business, George Martin, spoke of the many struggles and achievements. He spoke direct from the heart and credited the family as a whole. He made invitation to all to stop in and enjoy the waterfalls or feed the fish. “With so much to see and appreciate, browsers are always welcomed!”
One of the new categories this year was Outstanding Community Service. The Chamber has many volunteers in all walks of life but selecting the first recipient was easy. Robert (Bob) Mesher has been involved in many organizations but most notably the Belle Vernon Lions. Jason Mesher spoke of his father’s achievements with great pride and admiration. Year after year Bob volunteers his time for the Christmas Celebration known as Lite Up Nite in Rostraver Twp. Many times he has served as a grand and jolly Santa. His biggest achievement and enjoyment is working with young people and guiding them into leadership and a life of service. Bob then proudly shared how his entire family is part of a wonderful organization known to all as the Lions. “Down to my granddaughter Avery, she is a Lioness in the making”. Bob too makes invitation to all, “If you have an extra hour or so a month, think about joining the Lions and the reward will be great”.
The final category, also new this year, was The Young Professional of the Year. Tanya Chaney was an easy selection to receive this award. Speaking for Tanya was her close friend, Tracy Hawkins. She shared how Tanya worked to build a private massage practice, first from her home, that later transformed into the Chaney’s Natural Health. Tanya had attained her national certification as a Trigger Point Therapist in the summer of 2001. She is one of less than 200 therapists nationally to hold this certification. As a young mother, Tanya finds the time to juggle her responsibilities and enjoyment of family along with fundraising, committees, board meetings and her daily business of Chaney’s Naturals. She too credits her success to family, an amazingly supportive husband, great staff and friends.
The room was filled with pride, tears and laughter. Each of the honorees carry qualities that make them excel at achieving their goals. The qualities that set them apart from others are determination and drive.
Special recognition to the following: Keith Peer, GRC President, as Master of Ceremonies, Rep. Ted Harhai for the pledge of Allegiance, Tom Mimidis for the Invocation, Pat Alberts, Mon Valley Hospital and GRC Executive Board and his assistant Maureen Dimitroff for the invitations and Jennifer Codeluppi of Snapshot 47 for the event photography. I extend special thank you to Martin’s Flowers for the beautiful transformation of the lobby with flowers and décor, to Kim Redman, GRC executive board and The Willow Room for a “detailed to perfection” dinner. With deep gratitude I acknowledge the commitment and assistance of the GRC Director, Gina Lynn. Everyone’s help was greatly appreciated and definitely contributed to a wonderful evening.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Esther Antal
GRC Executive Board
The GRC extends sincere appreciation and thanks to Recognition Dinner Chairperson, Mary Esther Antal. Her dedication to this annual event goes above and beyond. We are indebted to her for the commitment and organization she provides in making this a truly wonderful evening of recognition and celebration. Thank you, Mary Esther!

Annual GRC Recognition Dinner
The Annual GRC Recognition Dinner will be held next Thursday, April 26th at The Willow Room. The evening will include cocktails, plated dinner, a delicious dessert, conversations with friends and colleagues, individual slide shows for each recipient and the award presentations.
The Recognition Dinner is an opportunity for the GRC to recognize businesses and individuals who go above and beyond in sharing their time, treasure and talent not only with the Chamber, but with other organizations and the community.
This year we are pleased to honor three categories of recognition. The recipients are:
Martins Flowers & Shrubs - Business of the Year
Robert Mesher - Community Service Award
Tanya Chaney - Young Professional of the Year
I'm wrapping up the slide shows for each recipient this week and I've enjoyed their journey as told through each of their photographs. It's fitting that I would be working on this aspect of the event during National Volunteer Week. We are very fortunate here at the GRC to have these three honorees as part of our organization.

Knowing What Feels Abnormal is Actually Normal
Chamber Professionals Gather at the Mon Valley Regional Chamber Luncheon
I often have the opportunity to attend networking events and other Chamber's luncheons. I always welcome the chance to join and meet "like minded" folks. Those in a a similar business, working for a related cause. It is always nice to see familiar faces and meet many new folks as well.
Like most people, I enjoy learning new things and methods of operation. I am also a firm believer of "why reinvent the wheel." If a practice is working, or working for another organization, why waste precious time trying to come up with another method. Most businesses, and even the Chambers rely on the same methods of operation - provide goods or services to customers; maintain and strengthen existing customer relationships; and increase or grow new customers.
What do I gain from these meetings and events? Like I said earlier, I'm always looking to learn new things, so here is what I try to take away:
1. The Importance of Meeting/Networking with Like-Minded People
If you are a member of the Chamber or any organization and have the chance to attend meetings/events, do so. From a business aspect, you will gain valuable insights, best practices and methods of operation that work for others. In addition, you gain business contacts, referrals, and the opportunity to grow your network. Of course, the referrals, contacts and opportunities don't necessarily happen in the first meeting, but a relationship begins to build. From a personal perspective you get a sense of renewed energy by sharing ideas and suggestions with people who have a similar vision.
2. The Importance of Making Folks Feel Welcomed and Included
When I attend events and meetings, I feel welcomed when greeted by the event planner with a simple "thank you" for coming. I hope that our Chamber members feel the same when attending our meetings and events. Do your employees feel welcomed and included in your business? Do you feel welcomed and included when you attend meetings for other organizations in which you belong? A handshake, an introduction, a "thank you for coming" are very simple ways to make people feel welcomed into your organization. A discussion, an opportunity to offer suggestions and opinions makes them feel included.
3. The Importance of Knowing What Feels Abnormal, is Actually Normal
It is nice to know that other businesses and organizations experience the same issues, problems and concerns that you do. Some days when you think you are the only business facing a particular problem, think again. There is some one out there some where with the same issue. Meeting with other "like minded" folks gives you the affirmation that you are not alone. The problem you think is abnormal, may actually be normal among other businesses. When you take the opportunity to attend meetings and events that bring businesses together you will see that you are not alone. It's a great support system.
So the bottom line, find the opportunities that put you in touch with "like minded" people. If you are a member of your local Chamber or networking group, attend the meetings. I know everyone is busy, but I think everyone can find an hour a month to meet with other people who may help you grow your business, offer support or suggestions, or simply confirm that what you are doing is working! If you are not a member of your local Chamber, then consider joining. It may be the best business investment you make.

Upcoming GRC and Member Events
The GRC is pleased to offer a variety of programs to our members throughout the year. And we are always happy when our Members have events that include everyone too.
Members and prospective members are encouraged to join us for events and activities. Through event attendance you promote awareness of your business to others and gain great networking opportunities. Event participation shows that you are an engaged Chamber Member and appreciate the events and opportunities presented to you.
Of course, it isn't possible to attend every event (some times you have to stay at your desk and work), but make it a priority to attend a few events per month. Attendance at events with like-minded individuals may give you a fresh perspective on an existing problem or may help re-energize or reaffirm your thoughts about your business.
When you attend events, be sure to introduce yourself to folks you don't know (it's easy to gravitate to the folks you already know, but be polite, say "hello", and let them know you'll chat later). Have your business cards on hand and set a goal to meet two new people per event.
I hope to see you at a few of the followig GRC and Member Events. See each flyer for specific reservation information and details.

Be an Active Chamber Member
By now, most of you are familiar with the Greater Rostraver Chamber of Commerce, the benefits of membership and the programs we offer throughout the year.
Most of you are either members of the GRC, or a member of your own, local Chamber of Commerce, which is great. You have made a wise business investment by joining the Chamber, but are you getting the most from your investment? Joining a Chamber is important, but being an active member is even more important.
I offer you the following tips on ways to be an active Chamber member:
1. Attend membership meetings and Chamber events
2. Be active on a committee or be involved with the planning of events.
3. Be nominated and elected to the Board of Directors.
4. Take advantage of advertising opportunities – both low cost and no cost are available.
5. Volunteer for events and Chamber activities.
6. Sponsor a special event.
7. Be a guest speaker at a meeting, or offer a workshop or seminar in your field of expertise.
8. Host a networking event or Business after Hours event at your place of business.

10. Follow the Chamber on social media and post comments and “likes” as your business.
For more information on any of these tips, please call me and I would be happy to personally help you apply them.
In closing, I leave with you the following statistics that I found in a research study titled The Real Value of Joining a Local Chamber of Commerce:
When consumers know that a small business is a member of the Chamber of Commerce they are 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company and are 44% more likely to think favorably of that business – www.schapirogroup.com.
Most consumers – 59% think that being active in the local Chamber of Commerce is an effective business strategy overall.
